The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is a government agency responsible for conducting biomedical and public health research. Through the use of federal funding, the NIH conducts research across 27 institutes and centers, and provides substantial biomedical research funding to external research facilities. Its focus encompasses basic, translational, and clinical research aimed at improving health and saving lives. In line with these objectives, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) conducts basic and translational research to understand and prevent infectious diseases. Within this institute, the Global Neglected Infectious Diseases Program focuses on NTDs that affect the poorest populations. By combining their strengths in drug discovery, pathogenesis, and vaccine development, NIH researchers are developing innovative tools and treatments to address a host of NTDs.
